Internet Explorer 8 is out
March 24th, 2009It’s happy days for web developers! Microsoft released Internet Explorer 8, which touts many improvements over previous versions. Find out more at Microsoft.com/IE8.
Why should web developers be happy? Internet Explorer 8 is the most standards-compliant version of IE yet. That means less time writing “special” code for IE and more time adding polish. End users should like some new features such as accelerators, improved speed, an improved favorites bar, and especially new search features.
My favorite feature is search suggestions from within the search box. This is especially great for when I don’t know exactly what to Google for.

“Internet Explorer 8 is the most standards-compliant version of IE yet.” — Yet still significantly worse than most browsers when it comes to compliance.
“That means less time writing “special” code for IE and more time adding polish.” False. You can’t just stop writing compliant websites for IE6 or IE7 users.
Thank you for your vote of cynicism, John. “significantly worse than most browsers when it comes to compliance” really doesn’t mean anything. In practical usage, however, one thing is for sure: If you are going to use Internet Explorer, upgrade to IE8.
As for still needing to write “special” code, no one can expect to simply stop having to all at once, but over time as older versions of Internet Explorer fade away, eventually we can just not support older versions. (For example, do you ever hear about requiring IE5 support?) IE6 is dying, thankfully, and Windows Update is going to ask existing IE7 users to upgrade soon. At the beginning of every month I check the browser market share for the previous month. It’s an interesting to track.
