[...] Every once in a while I’ll get an instant message via AIM from an elusive SalmonBot. Their names used to be of the form <Adjective>Trout, but now they show up as <Adjective>Coho. SalmonBots act as an intermediary between two unsuspecting people, making each think that the other started the conversation. It will even manipulate the messages before it relays them to the other person. *shrug* They’re just weird. I’ve blogged about them before.
It's some sort of aim bot that is relaying messages... only if you reply it relays your message from the bot to someone else...

I've had this experience also.. in fact.. I've gotten multiple random IM's from people named "somethingTrout"..

Once I actually got into a conversation with one of them I realized, they thought I had im'd them and my name was showing up as spongytrout. Very odd indeed..

I did actually, but it was more explicit. A few weeks ago I had someone do a similar thing, but they started coming up with these odd reasons for why they were contacting me and try were trying to get information from me. It was very strange.
