Training a Vista Tablet PC
September 1st, 2008Windows Vista has some pretty cool new Tablet PC specific features. One such features is improved handwriting recognition training. While the writing recognition software is pretty accurate by default, properly detecting even very sloppy handwriting most of the time, with training it can learn your specific writing style to become even more accurate.
The training program is available in the “Tablet PC” folder in the start menu as “Personalize handwriting recognition”. Alternatively you can simply type “personalize handwriting” into the search box and press enter.

This brings up the following window, where you have two choices. (that on-screen mouse is a feature that is part of the touch-screen technology of my tablet for when I use my fingers instead of the pen.)

First I will show what is available in the “Target specific recognition errors” choice. Here’s the introduction screen for that option:

For words that the recognizer always seems to get wrong, the first choice is good.

Now for the “Characters with similar shapes” option…

That’s all for the “target specific handwriting errors” option. Now for the “Teach the recognizer your handwriting style” choice.

Here is the introduction screen to the “Sentences” choice.

Here are a few handwriting samples. It’s clear that the sentences tend to target writing that would be tricky for the recognizer to identify with certainty.
That’s it for the “Sentences” option. There are 50 of those guys, which takes a few minutes to complete, but a big sampling is good, right?
Now for the “Numbers, Letters, and Symbols” option. There isn’t any introduction to this section, so let’s get right to it. Here are four examples of what kinds of things this section has you write. It’s pretty straight forward.

cool, too bad vista sucks
kevin, that was uncalled for…
cool blog btw, i will be an avid reader now!
…wait what?! >.< (for outsiders, there is an inside joke happening.)
Just purchased an X61 Tablet about a month ago (expect some blog articles shortly on my blog, but I’ve been to busy recently to report on my tablet pc experiences and shopping notes)
I spent almost 2 hours late one night last week training Vista Business by writing all 50 sentences. No other training was done like you mentioned (did not know all of those existed!)
Damn my hand was sore as hell after writing 50 sentences nonstop!
