October 8th, 2008If you’re not a student at Virginia Tech, this blog post is useless to you.
First, navigate to http://netcert.cns.vt.edu/. You will need to log in.

After you log in, you will see a message like the following. Click “Agree”.

Next you will see a page like the following.

Fill in your information, and click “Generate Certificate. Note that the information MUST be correct, so don’t try to cheat the system!

You will be brought to the following page.

If the download for the certificate didn’t start automatically, click the “Download the certificate” link. Save the certificate to a temporary location, like the Desktop or the Downloads folder.
Copy the password that is shown in the light blue box. It isn’t really a big deal, but don’t show this password to anyone. They would need both the password and certificate to pretend to be you on the network. (I’m only showing the key here, because I used a different certificate finally.)
Open the certificate file by double-clicking on it. In the window that opens, click “Next”.
![]()
The next screen allows you to specifiy the location of the certificate. This field will automatically be filled in. Click next.

Paste in the password that you previously copied.

Click “Finish”.

The certificate is now successfully installed on yo Jon. ur computer. At this point you may delete the certificate file. The next step is to connect to VT-Wireless for the first time.
Click the networking icon in the system notification area, and then click “Connect to a network”.

Double-click on “VT-Wireless”, or click on “VT-Wireless” and then click “connect”. If you don’t see “VT-Wireless” in the list of available wireiess networks, click the refresh button. If you still don’t see “VT-Wireless” in the list, make sure that you are within range.

A dialogue box will appear. Leave all text fields blank and click “OK”.

You’re done. Congradulations! Make sure to select the option to save the wireless network, so that when your computer is within range of the campus wifi it will automatically connect and recieve Internet access.
