Another Bot Approaches

August 19th, 2008

Another "trout" bot just talked to me.  Another bot by a different "trout-related" name tried to have a conversation with me a few days ago.  This time I played along a little bit.

(8:01:05) blanketedtrout: Have you lied to your children today?
(8:01:22) me: are you a bot?
(8:01:30) blanketedtrout: Erm. Who might you be?
(8:01:43) me: my name is greg
(8:01:52) me: who are you?
(8:02:03) blanketedtrout: Where have you found me?
(8:02:12) me: I didn’t. You IM’d me first
(8:02:20) blanketedtrout: I beg to differ?
(8:02:28) me: do you want my social security number or something?
(8:02:38) blanketedtrout: And your mothers maiden name.
(8:02:45) blanketedtrout: Are you from PSC?
(8:02:57) me: kthankxbye

At that point i blocked it.

What’s up with these bots?  How did they get my screen name, and what purpose do they serve?  These are some questions that I would love to have answered.  For now I will just make use of the trusty "block" feature. :-)

Please leave a quick comment if you have had a similar experience.

Super Smash Brothers 64 Glitch (blast form the past)

August 19th, 2008

Remember the Nintendo 64?  It’s still a great system, and it’s still fun to play those classic games.  There is a weird glitch in the original Super Smash Brothers.  Played on a Nintendo 64 console, the game simply stops.  Played through Project 64, however, we see even more weird behavior.  This is what some friends and I discovered for ourselves on Summer night. :-)

Oddest IM session. Bot?

August 16th, 2008

I just had the oddest IM session with IncensedTrout, via AIM.  The converstaion whent like this:

incensedtrout You look ghastly!
me: who is this?
incensedtrout who is this?
me:I asked you first
incensedtrout no you didnt
incensedtrout you know who I am
me:ok, I’m going to ignore what you say for a minute, and then block you unless you tell me who you are
incensedtrout alright
incensedtrout sounds good
*block*

I wonder what information it was going to try to dig out of me, but clearly it was a bot, or at most a very stupid human.  Has anyone else had such an odd experience?

FRI Version 1.7.0.1

August 11th, 2008

Since I added the ability to copy/move files between libraries in FRI 1.7.0.0, I realized that another feature was missing: The ability to filter by library in an advanced search.  Now with this next minor release, the user can not only filter by platform, language, players, rating, and image health, but also library.

Change log:

  • New Feature: Advanced searches can now be filtered by Library Folder.
  • Tweak: FRI if there is an unexpected error when FRI is closing, FRI will report the error and gracefully close.

FRI Version 1.7.0.0

August 9th, 2008

Every so often I will want FRI to be able to something, and then I realize, "Hey!  I’m the one who writes it!"  This time I had a problem to solve.  I just got a new laptop for college, and I wanted to have some ROMs on it.  The problem is that I have hundreds of gigs of ROMs, and only would want to play a few on the laptop.  The first solution would be to simply put the ROMs on a network share and have FRI look there for the ROMs, but then I wouldn’t be able to play the ROMs on the road.  A feature to be able to copy a ROM from one library to another (desktop to laptop) is exactly what I needed, so that’s what I wrote!

Here you can see that I have two libraries added.  The "Desktop" library is over a network share, and the "Laptop" library is just in my local home folder.
